Oncologist
We had both the Radiologist and Oncologist appointments made for Mike, we were seeing the Oncologist first. We get to the appointment, as usual there was paperwork to be filled out, got that done quickly, the majority was actually done online prior to the appointment. Now, I am going to back up for just a minute, while we were waiting to see the Oncologist Mike had done a Pet Scan, so we would be getting the results of that as well at the appointment today. Luckily we had that test done prior to the appointment so we were not spinning our wheels at this appointment only to find out he needed the Pet Scan, they were on top of it! We get in a room and we are waiting on the doctor, a nurse comes in to talk to us, she was very nice and thorough, she went over everything under the sun with us, it was so much information. When the doctor comes in my mind was already all over the place from the information with the nurse. Anyway, the doctor starts giving us a lot more information (oh boy!) it was so much to take in! He told us that Mikes cancer was HPV related cancer, apparently he had HPV and most of the time your body can rid it but his body did not, this cancer had laid dormant for many years per the doctor and apparently decided to show itself (poor Mike). He did tell us that this particular type of cancer was the best kind to have (sounds so stupid, no cancer is good) the cancer with treatment was very treatable is what he said. Now, the Pet Scan showed the cancer had crossed the mid line, meaning it started on one side and was now trying to cross to the other side (I was like no wonder we have been waiting forever!) he called the Radiologist from the room while we were there, told him that it was trying to cross but had not done so all the way. They both felt that radiation would get it, however to be safe they also wanted to administer chemo as a safety measure. Mike and I agreed that if they both felt this way, we should do both. So now, we had to go to the Radiologist to get that ball rolling as radiation and chemo needed to start the same week, he would get 35 rounds of radiation that would be everyday (we knew this before the visit after going to the Oncologist) and 7 weeks of chemo which would be once a week. They told us that he would get a port but we needed to see the Radiologist first, that appointment was already made for the next week. We left there with information overload but we had a solid plan, and we were ready.. SO we thought!
